Kittens squirm and look around and wiggle and crawl and never-ever-because-it’s-a-kitten-rule sit still. Newt was very different. She sat patiently while I went to take her photograph and just looked at me– and I swear it felt like someone was in there, understanding everything I said and did. I’ve only ever had that experience with adult cats, like when Pumpkin’s ears turn when I talk about him. Or when I talk to Morn and he looks intently back at me and meows in reply. Probably the most common is when I’m not feeling well and I’m on the couch- I can’t tell you how many times I’ve whined to the cats, “Will anyone come see me?” (And they wander over.) On some level I know they understand me and they try to communicate back in their own way. (Did you know cats only meow to humans? They will hiss and growl at other cats, but they only ever meow to people. They are trying to talk to us!)
I felt like Newt was one of the early bloomers- a kitten ahead of her time. I really encourage you to view some of these photos large (just click on them) so you get the full effect. Maybe it’s just me, but it really looks like someone’s looking out of those eyeballs, doesn’t it? (It’s not just me, is it?)

13 Sep 2012 at 11:21 pmaw, the story of your cats coming to you is so cute (so is the fun fact that cat’s only meow at humans, cute!).
Newt certainly looks wise. 🙂

My cat meowed a LOT when I first got him, but then stopped after a few weeks. I thought it was because we took him from his kitty family, but heard the same about cats only meowing at humans. He barely ever meowed after that until I started my first full-time job and (unfortunately) have to leave him home alone 9-5 every day. As soon as I come through the door at night he meows like crazy!! It breaks my heart every time, knowing how excited he is that I’m finally home to cuddle 🙂

8 Sep 2012 at 10:07 pmThat’s interesting about cats meowing to people only. I wonder how true that is? Kittens certainly meow at their mothers, right? Also, Franny has this adorable quirk where she will fall asleep, then wake up and immediately let out some frantic meows.
For a while I thought she was having kitty nightmares or something, and then I realized that she does it when she’s looking for Felix. She’ll wake up, IMMEDIATELY start meowing, Felix will look up from across the room and make eye contact and she’ll stop! There’s been a time or two where she’s wander into a room and let out the same kind of meow until she finds him.
Weird! Maybe Franny thinks Felix is his mom. 😉
