More Moments At The Museum

Let me start by saying most primates are terrifying. I literally just had one of those spine shivers just now while writing to you about it. Something about their all-too-familiar eyeballs creeps me out. Eww, I just had another shiver. (Sometimes I verbalize while I’m writing. Ok, I do this all the time, but I mean sometimes I say the things I’m typing out loud while I type them. Just now I said-half-whined my ‘eww’, shivered and Tom asked, “Are you writing about monkeys?” The man knows.) But despite the creepy primates this exhibit was my third favorite because, well, animals. It was a little sad at times to look at the extinct (or nearly so) animals, but mostly it was pretty beautiful. One of my favorite moments was actually of a brother walking his little sister around and reading to her. I don’t usually have the courage to snap pictures of strangers, especially kids, because my camera is not-at-all inconspicuous and I’m afraid some parent might come screaming into my viewfinder, but I couldn’t resist for this one. If you want to imagine what it’s like to people-watch Tom and I at a museum, he reads the text out loud and I usually just stare and listen. And take pictures of course.

I’ve never thought to take photos in a place like a museum. I just wouldn’t have thought such photos would be interesting, but yours definitely are! It makes sense–the items are there to be displayed and what better way to share that than through a camera? The glass and artificial lighting gives the photos an extra quality.

These are extraordinary and really interesting to look at. You are a constant inspiration, Sara!

Oh gosh, thanks Alyssa. I feel nervous sometimes at museums or when things are behind glass because sometimes it works (and it works well) and other times it just doesn’t work at all and it kills the mood of the photo, or the glass is just too dirty, so on and so forth. It’s worth a shot though when you’re in a museum because usually it’s pretty clean!

I’m with you on the primate thing. I love all animals, but primates are not my favourite, they can definitely be a bit creepy. I love the arctic foxes in this exhibit though, they’re beautiful and have a lot of character, even when stuffed!

I agree! There are some animals that clearly have no life but others it feels like if you just look away for a second and back again they’d be gone.

Lovely photos! I feel the same way about monkeys, too. I know quite a few people who adore them but they just creep me out and something about them is untrustworthy!

    Cannot. Handle. Monkeys.
They totally freak me out as well. Not in a good way. I usually stay away from them at zoos.

I’m so glad (you know what I mean) I’m not alone! I didn’t realize there were so many close friends that felt the same way. =)

awesome photos – looks like a great exhibit. Actually they have something similar in the Adelaide museum, but all the animals are getting a bit old & tired – this looks much more up-to-date

There was so much to explore, really! It was hard to photograph everything, and to be honest after the dinosaurs my CF card was getting pretty full so I didn’t even go as photo crazy as I would have liked.

Haha! Kim, you crack me up! I don’t think I’ve ever been too creeped out by primates, but I’ve had lengthy conversations with Cory about how much they freak him out, haha! What a fascinating exhibit…

I obviously can’t speak for everyone, but most of the time when I talk to others who dislike them too it is because of the eerie similarities between us and them. Something about it is a little disturbing!

Uhh you should really take a biological anthropology class! Their eyes are very similar to ours so idk what you are talking about them giving you shivers?

It’s actually because they are so similar that they give me the creeps!

Oh gawd. Monkeys totally give me the willies too! When Chris and I were in Costa Rica one of our guesthouses had a pet monkey and I let it wrap its creepy leathery little paw around my index finger while it stared into the depths of my soul with its human eyes.

    UGH!!!!

Oh. And awesome photos. 🙂 My favorite is the fox (?) with lunch hanging out of its mouth. So sad, cool, creepy and pretty all wrapped up in one. ~EMOTIONS~

Ugh ugh ugh. SO CREEPY. I think when we were at the zoo last I was photographing one of the monkey’s and I just had to stop because I swear he was THINKING AT ME. He knew what I was doing and it was just so weird.

      (And thank you!)
