So much can be said about the Traverse City State Hospital that I’m not even sure where to start. I guess I could talk about the history (but really that can be found on Wikipedia) or I could talk about how they’ve renovated part of the hospital and turned it into shops and condos (what?), but what you can’t find via the internet is the local folklore and gossip surrounding it. I grew up hearing stories that after the buildings were abandoned “patients” would return there out of habit and live in the tunnels underneath the hospital. Hardly anyone believed it, and it was a feat of bravery if you managed to muster up the courage to break in and explore at night. I’ll admit I did partake in this illegal recklessness several times once or twice. Friends and I explored through tunnels and the flooded library, old showers, and even the clock tower. And I’ll be honest, the only time I was frightened was in Building 50 (one of the only buildings that remains un-renovated)- and strangely a building for the warden, not the patients. Something about it really struck a nerve with me and I couldn’t stay long. I was also far too frightened to venture into the children’s ward. I really wanted to take Tom before it’s completely renovated and the chance is lost forever, but we settled for taking photos together of the exterior.
If you want to see something REALLY spooky, check out the creepy baby faces in my knees. No, really. You see them, right? Now you’ll never see my knees the same way again.

31 Mar 2013 at 11:26 pmOh. MY. WORD. Upon further inspection, it’s definitely just graffiti peeking through but I saw your message just now so I decided to check right before bed on my phone. In the dark with the lights out. Because I’m smart. When I saw it I threw my phone down it startled me so badly!

18 Mar 2013 at 6:16 amI miss living there, already. In the basement of the apartments I lived in, there was a door that was always locked – except when it wasn’t. When it wasn’t, it opened up into the rest of the unrenovated building, and it was amazing. Pretty sure the kitchen in that first photo was just inside that part of the building.
I wish they’d wise up and turn part of it into a museum; the couple of glass cases that they once had in Building 50 are nowhere to be found, and all we have left are a few scattered photographs. Would be neat if they maybe had a sign for each part of the hospital that said what had previously been there, or something.
(I definitely have a couple dozen of the hand-painted dormitory numbers.)

13 Mar 2013 at 2:36 pmOh! I recognized this building from your exterior pictures. My husband and I spent the day/night after our wedding in Traverse City and ate at one of the restaurants that’s in the renovated portion. It was almost 3 years ago, and we still talk about how good it was. I didn’t realize this was its history. I definitely want to go back now!

6 Mar 2013 at 1:30 pmHaha, thanks Amanda. I think sometimes it’s scary to point out “flaws” or weird things about yourself- but it makes me laugh so hard when I see it so I really wanted to share that.
