Ireland

The Cottage In Achill Island

The weather here lately has been “very Irish”. Tom and I have found ourselves chilled to the bone despite the temperature being moderate because the air is so damp. The only difference is the rain. The way the rain falls here is strangely hard to explain, but I’ll try my best. Here it can come down hard and only get you in a few places and you’re not really wet when you come inside. And you can leave your clothes on and you’ll dry soon enough. In Ireland the rain is more like a drizzle or a light spray but every time you end up soaked. And there’s no way you can leave your clothes on because you’ll feel damp all night long.

Last year around this time we were finishing up our last week in Ireland by staying in a beautiful little cottage at the very tip of Achill Island. We spent the first week visiting Tom’s family and during the second Tom took me around to see all the places I wanted to see, and then in the last week we had some time to relax and be there. It was probably one of my favorite parts of the trip. I woke to the sound of sheep grazing outside my window and the smell of the ocean just down the street and fell asleep to the sound of the rain. When you left the cottage, you could go right just a little ways down the road to reach the edge of the island where huge cliffs waited to be climbed and abandoned ruins to be explored. If you went straight you’d find a long stretch of beach where you could sit and watch the ocean. I enjoy the autumn months here. The leaves that change, the crisp air, the rainy hot cocoa nights… but today, Ireland, I’m thinking of you.

Haha, I actually didn’t eat/drink them because I don’t enjoy them in my hot cocoa but that’s how the cafe made them for us! Tom’s caramel drink had an entire layer of melted caramel on top. =)

Aw. I swear. Every time the talk about where we wanna plan our next trip comes up, I always throw out Ireland and cite the AMAZING photos from your honeymoon!

And there’s something about rain, and Fall in general – I am never even half as nostalgic as I am on a crisp October night. Totally feelin’ this post. Big time!

I agree with you! There’s something in my biological clock that definitely gets me thinking/retrospective around this time of year. For me the “American Thanksgiving” has always been my “new year”. I usually have reviewed the year in my head and come up with some ideas for my future and everything…

It’s weird what the weather can do!

Thanks, Jasmine! I wish I could go back. In fact I’d just wish I’d had more time during that last stretch to spend there at the island. It was really soul patching, if you know what I mean.

I love this post. A lot. There’s something about rain that always gets to me. I love my sunny, clear days in the fall, but the rain (when indoors) is so relaxing. Sipping tea by the window with a good book – of course, when there is no homework to be done. That’s probably why I December so much. My birthday falls directly in the middle (the 15th) and school is literally done the days before, so I can drink hot cocoa and watch it snow with a fire in the wood stove.

Oh, I wrote too much for just a comment. But I’m with you on this mood. I live for moments like these. And of course, absolutely stunning photos.

Thank you! I don’t think you wrote too much at all. Sometimes I’m not sure what to say other than thank you (thought I want to say so much more) when people comment because I appreciate the time it takes to do so, but when you write like this I can definitely connect!

I have a love/hate relationship with winter! While I really really hate being cold, and I hate that I have to worry about my camera when I take it outside and bring it back inside (doing the whole plastic bag thing stinks!)- I really love cozy sweaters and evenings by the fire!
