Taking It All In

I didn’t really take that many photos on our “first day” because we’d just been in airports or flying for the last eight hours and since they’re five hours ahead of us, even though we arrived at 8 am, I was pooped! From the Dublin Airport, we took the AirCoach to a place near Tom’s great aunt Valerie, who graciously took us in for our first few days visiting. She showed us around Dublin and Blackrock and we were able to meet a great deal of Tom’s family, all were just as friendly and welcoming as he said they would be. We had dinners with different family members almost each night, and every time there was a vegetarian dish (or two!) made just for me. (Several of Tom’s relatives were vegetarian WHICH WAS AWESOME.) AND, they are the hugging type of family. You know? They hug, and I mean really hug you, and it was wonderful. Though I took a gazillion photos of those wonderful events, I won’t be sharing those because I’m not sure his family would appreciate their faces (or houses) being plastered on the internet, as I forgot to ask. And, you know, I want to make a good impression.

PS: This is Enya’s house. I think by now you guys already know I am easily excited and a complete dork. I grew up listening to her, I love her, and I totally took a creepy photo of her house.

On Route & In Flight

Boy do they keep you busy when you fly first class! We had barely taken off when they dropped off our menus, gave us a drink (champagne or orange juice), and loaded us up with our own personal movie/tv/music device. I squealed a little when I saw the menu was in both English and Irish. (I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this yet or not, but before you correct me, (ahem Riley) the locals do actually call it “Irish” and not “Gaelic”.) After eating Tom and I laid back in our beds, I mean, seats, and watched UP together. We put our personal players together like goofballs and hit “play” and “pause” a few times until they were in time. WE’RE DORKS. We also watched Date Night and A-Team. (It was a looong flight.)

Look at this thing. My head almost exploded when I saw how many buttons there were. Seriously.

US Airways First Class Lounge

There was quite the difference between the Air Canada lounge and the US Airways International lounge. (On the way back we stayed in the US Airways Domestic lounge and while it wasn’t as spiffy as the International, it was still pretty awesome.) Notice the BMW has been replaced with Porsche? Mayday, mayday! I think we’ve breeched the higher class. I say that because while I was excited and on a super high about going to Ireland and photo-documenting every second, the friendly people interested in what I was doing were gone. People didn’t really notice me here, except for one, and that my friends, was a maid. A maid who approached me while I was photographing food and very rudely asked me “what I thought” I was doing. Normally I would be okay to respond, but she was so rude and abrupt and she said it while in the middle of answering a question of a man who looked remarkably like Bruce Willis (whom I met in person once so I knew it wasn’t him) and so he was staring at me waiting for my response, could barely choke out, “I’m a passenger.” (Holy run on sentence!) I think she thought I was from the press or a journalist or something, but either way, I returned to my seat after that and died of embarrassment. I was done taking photos anyway otherwise I would have shown her who was boss! (Okay, maybe not, but I really was done.) And now I’m sharing the story with you. Because it’s humorous. At least I thought so.

Hey, It’s Garrett!

It’s been a while since I featured a fellow photographer, it’s well overdue, and when I saw these photographs I simply couldn’t help but share.

Featuring the photography of Garrett Miller

There’s something heart-stopping about Garrett’s work, particularly his photographs from Japan. Perhaps it’s because for me, it’s an exotic location with things I don’t see everyday, or perhaps it’s because the same could be said for him, and he was inspired. No matter what the case, he’s captured some treasured moments here. That and he’s, well, talented. But that goes without saying. (But should it? No, it shouldn’t.)

I think we all know how much I love “everyday photography”, if we can call it that. The moments of our lives and the lives of others that are there for only an instant, and then they’ve passed us by. If you weren’t looking, they’re gone forever. Each one of these photographs is a captured moment, each with its own feeling and presence that moves beyond mood or composition. True inspiration.

Feel free to visit Garrett’s website and portfolio, or his Flickr, or please also feel free to click any photograph you like (or several) to be taken to the original photo page on Flickr.

PS: Fellow photographers, Garrett has his EXIF data viewable on every photograph, so if you’re wondering how a certain photograph was taken, or what with, you need look no further than his stream.

Goodbye Toronto, Hello Philadelphia

After discovering I was, in fact, brave enough to whip out the camera in the first class lounge, I didn’t hesitate to take photos on the plane ride either. Since the flight was only roughly an hour, we didn’t have time to watch a long movie, but we wanted to take advantage of the first class amenities, so we watched a documentary on Einstein. (Which was awesome.) I guess it may seem a little silly to be photographing in-flight food and orange juice, but it’s these little things I know I’ll want to remember when I’m sixty. Like that there was a maple leaf on the bottom of the glasses, that I giggled when the flight attendant spoke in French, and how shocked I was that they no longer gesture you through the plane safety instructions like they used to. (It’s all on video now.)

Air Canada First Class Lounge

And so begins the Ireland series. Because I am a dork and have never flown on a first class international flight before, I took photos of absolutely everything in the lounge. I was nervous at first, because I didn’t want people assuming some crazy person was running around photographing everything. … Okay, don’t say anything. Well, after a minute or two of debating in my head about being brave enough, I decided to go for it. Most people were quite amused by it. A few asked me what I was up to (flashing a smile and, “I’m on my honeymoon!” was usually enough), why I was photographing, and even posed for me! All in all it was a great start to an amazing vacation.

Cold December Morning Cuddles

I hope these photos warm you up on a particularly cold day.
Or perhaps it’s not cold at all. In that case, I hope they make you smile.

Feelin’ Festive

I had a pretty rough day today, but I saw this sheet of window decals for $1.50 and couldn’t resist. Sometimes it’s the little things that make the day all right again.

Since we live in a high rise and nobody can see our windows, (really I’d just like to see them every day) so I put them on the fridge.

Elk Rapids Antique Warehouse

And with this we have the last of the Elk Rapids Antique Warehouse! Be sure to check out the other two in case you missed them. If this doesn’t put you in a treasure-hunting mood, then I’ll eat my shorts! (Okay, I won’t, I’ll just be wrong, but that’s not as dramatic, is it?)

Elk Rapids Antique Warehouse

Happy Monday, friends! Here’s another peek at the Elk Rapids Antique Warehouse! Don’t forget to check out the first post about it in case you missed it. And there were probably about six or seven pairs of Victorian boots there the day I visited. I seriously wanted to take them all home with me. Alas, I think our car was packed enough.

The Simple Gibson Tuck

I’ve received a lot of compliments on this easy rendition of the once popular Edwardian hairstyle, and I keep thinking to myself that Victorian is in right now and I should share this simple style. But it wasn’t until a make up artist stopped me in a coffee shop in Traverse City asking me how that I finally put my foot down. As soon as I get back from Ireland, I thought. Well today it’s snowing up a storm outside and I don’t have everything I need to bake the muffins I wanted, so here we are! These photos aren’t the greatest display of the Simple Gibson because I didn’t have a mirror and I’m SO picky that I wanted the photos of the hair to match the video, so I took them right after the video. The look is a lot cleaner when you have a mirror.

What You Need

    ★ comb
★ hair tie (it doesn’t really matter what color)
    ★ bobby pins
    ★ roller (optional)

What You Do

Pull your hair into a ponytail. You can make it high, semi-high, or low, as this looks great in all three. (I’ve tried them all!) Next you’ll want to gently pull on the ponytail, almost as if you were going to take it out, and then take your finger and wiggle a gap into your ponytail (in between your scalp and the hair tie) making a sizable nest. Twist your ponytail around your finger with one hand and then roll it up into the neat little nest you made. Now this part can be tricky: keep rolling it up until your ponytail holder can be tucked flush against your scalp and then use the bobby pins to pin your hair tie against your scalp, keeping the style in place. It’s important that you pin the hair tie because not only will it keep the look in place, but it will hide your hair tie all together. Pretty awesome, I’d say.

Using A Roller

Using a roller instead of your finger is also an option. It’s good to use a roller if you’re trying this look with shorter hair, or you have lots of layers and you don’t want them falling all over the place, or you have really fine hair and it’s hard to roll it. What it does is fattens the bun and really makes it stick out, so if you have shorter hair, this will make it look fuller.

It’s definitely handy, but be careful, because I’ve found that sometimes it’s hard to unroll it without your hair getting stuck all over the place. I’ll probably end up getting a smooth roller because sometimes I love that fat tuck look.

Sorry the video is hazy and slightly out of focus. I’m still getting used to the video options on the new camera! (Also, if the video is for some reason blocked in your country you should be able to view it with an alternate soundtrack here on YouTube.)

Update: I’ve decided that the Gibson Tuck is way more fun with shorter hair.

My hair is just brushing my collarbone in this photo and it tucked beautifully! So those of you worried about this look with shorter hair, don’t. =)
