Belated Birthday Lunch & How To Replicate Film

On Saturday we visited Tom’s mom and her husband for a little belated birthday gathering, and she spoiled us with some fabulous vegan food and deserts (cinnamon infused cherry cobbler, oh my gosh) and we spent all day talking about life and visiting. (We always spend several hours over there talking before realizing that it’s been as long as it has.) And aside from spilling water on my desk and spending fifteen minutes airing out my wallet, keyboard, and random papers with a hair dryer- my Sunday was fairly uneventful, but in a good way. It left me feeling rested and excited to start the work week! I hope yours was just as delightful.

On a different note, many of you have been emailing me asking me if it’s possible to “truly replicate” the look of film using the Reminisce action set, and so I thought I would process these photos to kind of show you the potential. Whether your film habit is too expensive, conflicts with your vegan values, or you just want to experiment- it’s definitely possible. While every type of film is different, and there are lots of different types of looks you may want to accomplish, it is possible to get fairly close to so many using what is provided in the set. I tried to keep it simple for this example and used only “Sage” (the “Reminisce” layer was between 80-100 opacity for each photo), sometimes with “Reminisce” added on top. After that I dropped this handy film style dust & particles layer [download full res] on top (set it to screen, 50-80% opacity) and voilà, film craving satisfied. Enjoy!

August Flashback

I think it’s probably natural to feel a little “lost” after completing two year long projects in a row. I find myself thinking, and almost in a panic, “Oh my gosh, I should be taking photos of something, but what!” And then I realize, there are no prompts, I don’t have to do any self portraits, I can just relax and take photos of whatever I want. Yes, perfect, this is relaxing and just what I need. But then I think it might not be so bad if I started a 52 weeks project. WHAT IS MY PROBLEM? Projects are fantastic. They help us get out of our comfort zones, they give us inspiration and motivation and we meet cool new people and take photos we never would have taken otherwise. But I’ve overloaded myself with projects the last few years that I promised myself this year I would take it easy(ier). So even though right now I feel like I have no direction, and during the time of the day I spent mulling over ideas and taking a shot for two years I simply wander around with my camera feeling helpless, I’m going to roll with it. Because it will pass, and it won’t be so scary after a while.

This isn’t a macro shot. It isn’t even shot with my macro lens, but it’s not every day you get a chance to photograph a salt water aquarium so we’re going to roll with it.

Do you see those rubber bands hanging on the key ring? Those were for when I went running. Until this month I was strapping my iPhone to the treadmill with a rubber band or two so it would stay put while I ran, and so I left the rubber bands with the gym key so I wouldn’t forget. For my birthday this year I was given an iPod nano, which clips to my clothes, and I no longer need to MacGyver my iPhone to the treadmill. But when I look back on this photo in a few years after I’ve forgotten, I will laugh at the two/three years I spent collecting rubber bands from every asparagus bundle we brought home from the grocery store, forgetting them and only realizing once already in the gym and coming all the way back to get some, having them snap mid run- all just so I could listen to some music while I ran.

Usually I can’t handle spicy foods at all and as Tom made this chili we both thought there was no way I’d manage. “Mild” doesn’t mean squat. Okay, maybe mild means, “Sara’s mouth will explode and everyone else will wear confused looks on their faces, take another bite and conclude it’s not really spicy at all.” Because that’s usually what happens.

Except that I used to love chili dogs when I was younger. (Probably a result of being a Sonic the Hedgehog kid. I can’t believe I just admitted that.) So even now I will stretch my tolerance for spice a little bit as long as it’s in chili. And this chili was perfection.

Friends For Christmas

You know that saying about time and having fun? Well, it’s definitely true. Two weeks ago when my sister and friends came to visit it really felt like they were here for two days instead of five. We got each other games for Christmas and I believe we tried every single one (OK- we didn’t get to Killer Bunnies or Riley’s Glee board game) and even some we played twice! My favorites of the bunch were Munchkin, Pandemic, and Mansions of Madness (which will have a post all it’s own). It’s so easy to get caught up in technology these days and forget that a world exists beyond our phones or computers, so it was really nice to play a game that didn’t involve a screen other than a paper one. (D&D reference, for the win!) Of course we took some time to play some good old fashioned Dungeons & Dragons. It the first time in a long time I wasn’t the DM so I got to play and have my character do ridiculous things and really have fun with it. (My sister and I played characters with a relationship similar to Shawn and Gus in the TV comedy show Psych, if you watch that.) And yes, in that last picture Pumpkin AND Atlas are sitting on her lap while we play. Cat lady runs in our blood.

Time Traveling To The End of July

I hope everyone had a fabulous new year. Thanks so much for all the feedback on my year end recap, I almost didn’t write it up. I was up until 3am working on it, but I’m so glad I did it because I realized that I worked really really hard last year and it’s always good to reflect on the year and decide what worked and what didn’t. And thank you for all the birthday wishes on Twitter, Facebook and via email- you folks really spoil me. It was great seeing all those. I’m officially back from vacation as of yesterday, so it’s back to regular posting!

The Spurred project is over, and to be honest, I’m not sure what to do with myself! I feel so strange in that I don’t have to take a picture of anything today if I don’t want to. (I have anyway, of course.) But I promised myself I wouldn’t do another heavy duty project this year because there are so many little projects I’d like to try. Anyway, let’s time travel back to the end of July to share those prompted photos.

I thought that he was sticking his tongue out like that because he had an infection and his nose was plugged up, but he does it all the time now too.

Thank You, 2011

It’s that time of the year again where I recap the year and make resolutions. I wasn’t sure I’d even make it this year because this last bit of the year has been so packed with Christmas and visiting family and friends, and then New Years tea parties that I just didn’t think I’d find the time to go through all these photos and remember what I did. But then I took a look at the goals I set for 2011 and my heart swelled. I was so shocked when I pulled out my list and was able to mark off almost everything.

    ✔ Make at least one new healthy recipe once a week.
    ✔ Take at least one photo a day.
    ✗ Read 52 books by the end of the year.
    ✔ Prepare to run a marathon.
    ✔ Write a book.
    ✔ Take a vacation to somewhere new.
    ✗ Learn 2000 kanji in my Japanese study. (I’d say I learned about 350-400?)
    ✔ Stay joyously happy, grateful for every moment, and unabashedly in love.

On top of that I quit my day job to pursue photography, did the food photos for a cookbook, beat my record time for running two miles, started a regular workout routine, met online friends in real life, and had my photography published in a magazine. 2011 was an amazing year for me, and I have so so much to be thankful for.

January


I start the year hopeful and with many projects and goals. I begin the Spurred project, my second year long photo-a-day project, and re-launch my writing website Minus The Papercuts- in honor of the fact that Tom and I met on a writing forum ten years ago. I release my first Photoshop action set for photographers, The Black & White Collection.

February


Getty Images requests a batch of photos of mine to sell, Tom tries to convince to me quit my job to focus on photography, and I try making a batch of vegan bread in our bread maker but fail miserably. (This is important to me because I have yet to make the perfect loaf!) I fall ill with bronchitis at the end of February and have it through the beginning of March, but I manage to take my daily prompt photos from the couch or bed, determined to make it through. My hair is as long as it’s been in years.

March


When the earthquakes and tsunamis hit Japan, I host a print & postcard sale and all proceeds are donated to relief efforts, we visit the Niagara Falls butterfly conservatory, I break up with my jeans for a month and wear skirts or tights or anything-but-jeans (and love every minute of it!), begin doing yoga, and wrap up work on my second action set.

April


With Tom’s encouragement I finally quit my job working with kids to work from home on photography full time. It is scary, thrilling, and lights a fire under my butt to work hard and push myself to my limits. I release my second action set “A Colorful Morning“, I bring home my new favorite lens (Tom excitedly inherits the 24-70mm), we discover a new Asian fusion restaurant with vegan options, and I cut my hair off and Tom is unexpectedly recruited for a new job that he loves.

May


I bring home Bruno, our strawberry plant, and Tom puts up shelving for him in the kitchen, and Tom and I spend a lot of time recreating vegan versions of our old favorite meals. We can make a mean “tuna” casserole, grilled peese and soup, and I have officially fallen in love with our homemade black bean burgers. Seriously, I eat them all the time. All. the. time. I begin an at-home fitness routine (high intensity interval training) and devote myself to being the best I can be. Tom’s great aunt from Ireland visits and we go to a local conservatory to explore.

June

June is spent mostly outdoors. We enjoy the Milton Strawberry Festival, Tom and I find ourselves featured in the local newspaper, visit Springridge Farms to pick strawberries, hike 6 miles at another conservatory with Tom’s new boss and his wife, we successfully recreate Okonomiyaki, I photograph lightning for the first time, and and I’m recruited for the photography to an upcoming cookbook.

July


I mark another lens off my “ultimate dream team” wishlist, Tom and I spend a short weekend in Traverse City shooting a wedding, spend a few days with my family and friends before heading home and leaving behind my first digital SLR (the XTi) for my younger sisters, and then spend the rest of July working my butt off working for editing wedding photos, working on the cookbook, working on my third action set, and promising myself when this is through I’ll take a vacation.

August


Tom has a birthday, Atlas becomes a new member of our family, and the next few weeks are spent caring for him during his three week illness and subsequent quarantine. He quickly wedges his way into the hearts of Morn and Pumpkin, and finds his forever home here with us. Soon we can’t imagine our home without him in it.

September

I am honored to be one of the photographers at the wedding of a childhood friend and old roommate, grateful to see old friends and to see my family so soon after our last visit, and now have over 65 photos requested and available through Getty Images stock photography site. Tom and I celebrate one year after a successful transition into a vegan lifestyle, and I am slated for a photo and food feature in Chickpea Magazine. I’m still going strong with my work out regime, have broken my lifetime speed record for my mile, and feel better than I have my whole life.

October


Tom and I celebrate three years together, we carve pumpkins, dress up the cats, and I am offered the cover shot for the cookbook. I jump up and down and spend the day dancing around the kitchen in an apron and gloves.

November


As if I wasn’t swamped enough, I take on writing 50,000 words in the month of November, as well as a 30 Day Gratitude photo project, while still trying to manage my Spurred prompt project. It is a busy month but Tom and I both reach our 50,000 word goal, the Gratitude Project becomes an instant favorite with me and is already slated for next year, and I realize there is only one month left of Spurred. It’s the home stretch.

December


Tom and I bring home a new Christmas tree, spend a weekend in New York meeting online (and fabulous) friends in real life for the first time, spend Christmas Eve & day with Tom’s family, and host my sister and friends for five days and have a superb vacation playing board games, talking, catching up, and devouring pots of tea by the gallon.

This year has been so incredible for me, and while writing this up I realized that most of these notes are photography related. And that caused me to realize I worked my butt off this year and I am so proud of my accomplishments, however small or big they may feel at times. I gave 2011 my all and took off my training wheels, jumped into the deep end, and really did my best. And really, that’s all I could ever want. I hope I carry over the same passion, drive, and faith in myself in the coming year. And I hope 2012 is ready for me.

Goals for 2012

Learn that it is okay to take breaks.
Shoot 12 rolls of film.
Organize my hard-drives and become a digital minimalist instead of a digital pack-rat.
Keep up with my fitness regime.
Do something that scares me (photography related).
Take a vacation to somewhere new, again.
Learn 200 more kanji in my Japanese study.
Stay joyously happy, grateful for every moment, and unabashedly in love.

And once again, I wish you all a year full of joy, love, kindness, good food, cats, and PHOTOGRAPHY!

Christmas Moments

The holiday was really great for Tom and I (and the furballs). It was very relaxing and stress free, which usually isn’t the case. We went over to Tom’s dad’s for a family breakfast and gift exchange on Christmas Eve morning, and then to Tom’s mum’s for breakfast Christmas morning. We made our vegan eggnog french toast and tofu scramble and had a grand time catching up with relatives and watching them open our gifts. (I love giving gifts, my favorite part is wrapping and watching people open things I’ve spent weeks trying to keep my mouth shut about!) I was able to Skype with my mom and little sisters to do gifts over webcam, which was both painful and perfect at the same time, and my sister (Kat) and some friends from high school in Michigan (Will & Riley) have arrived safely and we’ve been having so much fun. Board games, card games, games games games. They are here until New Years so I hope you don’t mind that I’ll be taking a few days off blogging to spend it with them. (I’ll photograph everything too, of course.) This Christmas was so wonderful and fulfilling and it’s the perfect way to end an incredible year, and an even better start to a new one.

Where I Realize There’s Only 12 Days Left

Can you believe this weekend is Christmas? I keep saying that there are only 12 days left of the 365 Days Spurred project, but then I realize that means there are only 12 days left of 2011. Where did this year go? I feel like it went by so incredibly fast, and so much happened for me, that I really can’t separate memories and events from 2010 and 2011! It also means I should probably start working on my yearly photo recap. =)

Reminisce – Film Style Actions

For those of you that visit this blog for reasons unrelated to photo-processing (HI!) I apologize in advance for postponing the Spurred project to announce this release. For those of you that have been patiently waiting the last few months for the film actions- The wait is over! I’m happy to release Reminisce, a collection of 22 Film Style Actions (11 Subtle Film Styles & 11 Potent Film Styles), 6 Essentials Actions, and 3 Bonus Helper Actions. On Thursday of last week I decided I promised some of you I’d have them out by Christmas and I really wanted to keep that promise. So I’ve been glued to Photoshop ever since, but I wouldn’t rest until I felt everything was as perfect as it could be. I am positively in love with this collection and have been using it every day (as you’ve probably noticed), and I hope you love it as much as I do. Dancing Wings Conservatory

I’ve been working on a new film-style action set for a few months now, but it’s getting to the point where I feel like I’m pretty close to releasing them. I initially had a goal set to release them this week so they could be out before Christmas, but I’m not sure I’ll make it in time. I have some other work to finish up for another client before I can really let loose on these. However, there’s no reason why I can’t show you some photos processed with them! A few weekends ago Tom and I went to visit friends we met online a few years ago, and during our wonderful stay we visited the Dancing Wings Conservatory! If you happen to like butterflies, you can see photos from another garden Tom and I visited earlier this year here and here. Enjoy!









Where I Talk About Stuff That Isn’t Even Pictured

Today is our the annual fire alarm testing in our building, aka The Day Of Great Disturbing, in which the cats and I hide in the office with the door closed huddled in corners and wearing earmuffs, respectively, while the fire alarm goes off every few seconds for most of the day.

I feel like I should go take a walk or something but I think I’d feel terribly guilty leaving the cats to huddle together in the office without me. Also, you may have noticed, but I finally finished updating my site design. Everything is now integrated and for the most part everything went smoothly. A few of my thumbnails are missing, but as far as complications go it could be a lot worse! I really like this new design and I feel it makes my old one look like it was made in the 90s. I hope you like it too! And, of course, I hope you have a great Monday and enjoy this Spurred update.

It’s time to go grocery shopping. We pull out a few bags from the closet. We grab our sungless and shoes and get ready to go. As we start to leave we realize that we have a stow-away in one of the bags. Gotcha.

For our wedding, Tom and I had registered own website so people could RSVP online, print out directions, etc. Afterward, I couldn’t bare to part with the domain so Tom and I decided we’d turn it into a personal hub where we could post photos of the wedding for our family to see.

Unfortunately, I haven’t even finished those yet. One of the downsides of being a professional photographer is that your stuff comes last in the list of things to-do.
