January 2011 in Film

When my mother handed down her Olympus OM-1n, there was a fresh roll inside, and last January I finally got around to using it, and only last week I finally dropped it off. Last year I made a resolution to shoot 12 rolls of film (one a month) and then develop them once a month the following year. It didn’t really work out like I had planned, I was so busy with other projects that I think I only shot one and a half. But I took this one in to be developed anyway, and I was really pleased to see how the photos turned out. (Click on them to see larger versions.) There is also a roll in the Canon AE-1 one I picked up last August and it has six shots already used, so I’m kind of curious to see what’s on there.

Oh, and one more thing! The photos are paired together because they were right next to each other on the roll, and so they were scanned in together. But when I looked at them after, I really liked that they were paired with each other, so I left it!

These photos were taken with my mum’s Olympus OM1-n “Clementine”, and a Zuiko 50mm 1.8.

Thanks again, Kathryn! I’ll admit the last shot is definitely my favorite. I’m so happy to have captured that moment! Pumpkin looks like he’s in heaven!

Oh, these seriously make me want to pull out my AE-1 and shoot some film right now! You did great with these. And you’re right. The way they’re paired together is great. I just love the look of film.

Thanks so much, Sarah! I was definitely nervous, it being my first roll in so long. I’m sort of terrified that I will have my heart set on moments I’ve taken with film only to find that it didn’t catch or roll properly or I messed up so how and the moment is lost. I’m glad that wasn’t the case! (This time…)

These are gorgeous. I love film so very much. My favorite modeling photos of me are the film ones. I tell people that and they say “you can’t tell a difference!” They are so wrong. To me it’s very obvious which are film and which are digital.

Do you think you’ll dabble in film yourself any time soon? I know Alyssa’s been rocking it (beautifully) lately!

WOO for film! Your shots are gorgeous 🙂

I haven’t ever owned an Olympus (though I have been on the look out for one for a while) but recently purchased my first Minolta, which I’m rather excited about getting to use.

I usually stick with Fuji film for my shots but I love the tone in these.

That snow frog is SO RAD!

Beautiful! I’m so excited to see more from you! I saw your tweet last night about scanning ruining the photo quality and totally know what you mean. Your scanner must be better than mine, though, because these look wonderful!

I am jealous of the lens! I have been wanting to buy a 50mm 1.8 but am not yet ready to pay the price. Right about now I’m wishing I had gone the Nikon route–or that my dad had gone the Canon route–so that I could use my 1.4!

    Kerokerokeroppi snow-frog? Uh, epic WIN.
Glad you’re excited about shooting in film–and look forward to the next roll that’s developed.

One of the main advantages of film is no white blance. With digital cameras people fail to realize how much this affects your image. They think shooting sooc is like shooting film…WRONG!

The tones on these are great…what film did you use?

I wish I knew! It was already loaded when I used it and when I took it out there was nothing distinguishing on the case to give me an idea of a type or speed. It was Kodak brand, but as for the type and speed, I’m clueless. (Which is such a bummer because I really love how it turned out and would love to use it again!)

I gasped when I read your comment, haha. It does. It’s simple Kodak Gold 200 speed. THANK YOU! (It looked so cool I thought it was something fancy like Portra!)
