Our First China

I like taking photos of every day objects. I think it keeps me “sharp”. I am very particular about my composition normally, but in a boring way. I like my subject in the middle, everything very symmetrical, and while for some shots that’s okay, it doesn’t leave much room for the imagination and it doesn’t really help me grow at all as a photographer.

Lately I’ve been trying to put things off center, tilt the camera even slightly, or to go against my nature and cut off part of the subject. Perhaps I shall dub it the “Off Center Experiment”. Yeah, I like that.

Tom and I have been shopping around for a set of “wedding china”, which as I understand it, is something some couples pick out together and either put it on their registry or purchase it together themselves. We found some sets we liked, and a lot we didn’t, but while we were visiting a quaint little town the other day, we stopped in to their Salvation Army on a whim. (I like to hunt for vintage cameras or mugs I don’t need and Tom is always on the look out for video games.) And there they were, sitting on the shelf. We bent down and I did my “ooh”s and he did the “ahh”s, and then we ended up taking home our first fine china set. I’m so thrilled and happy that we stopped in when we did to find it. But is it bad that I am the most excited about the future of my food photography? I mean, that’s okay, right?

What a find ^_^ I think it’s grand that you’re (still) excited about photography!

I suppose I am doomed (except not really) to be obsessed with it for the rest of my life! =D

We hunted high and low for the perfect china and found it in an unexpected place too. It made the find all the more sweet. Love the granola shot!

I think picking it out and buying it together is the best. It really made it “ours” and it’s so appropriate for something like our first china.

That’s kind of our plan, hopefully it will be something we can pass down. =)

Good lord those dishes are gorgeous. I have major plate envy right now. I never thought about the whole “wedding china” thing, but now that you’ve mentioned it you better bet your bottom dollar that I’ll be searching nonstop from here on out for the perfect set.

You see, I have a bit of an obsession with dishware. All kinds. Plates, bowls, cups, serving platters, dessert dishes, wine & cocktail glasses, cute or fancy silverware… Obsessed. Utterly obsessed.

Oh my gosh, I definitely have an obsession as well. I always want to bring home new dishes or mugs and Tom has to stop me, haha. Oh, my word. I bet you could find some AMAZING china over there in Japan. They have such a wonderful cultural aesthetic. Keep me posted if you find any! I’d love to see them.

For sure. The only thing is how expensive they usually are! As much as I love dishes, I’d *rather* spend my money on clothes — or better yet, travel — or, even more importantly, foooooooood.

Last week one of my (fairly plain) dishes broke, leaving me with only one that size, so I actually *need* to go buy some soon. Problem is, this month’s budget is already totally set aside for other things, & next month’s is set aside for a refrigerator, & in October I’m traveling, & by Christmas I want to buy a TV….
