Bronte Harbour

The most tragic thing about Bronte Harbour is that years and years of compounded pollution has made the waters unsafe to swim in. We’ve come to discover this new town we’ve found ourselves in is a lot of my home town in Michigan- and startlingly so! I had no idea there was a harbour (I’m spelling it Canadian style, my indoctrination is slow but true!) five minutes down the road from our house. (My entire life I’ve lived within five minutes of a large body of water, so perhaps I just instinctively navigate toward it or something.) It honestly never occurred to me that a lake would be there and you’d be unable to swim in it because of pollution. People gave me funny looks here when I expressed my shock over it, to everyone here it’s just natural, but to me it’s a horrific loss. Back in Traverse City when it’s over eighty degrees the locals just throw towels over their shoulders, grab their flip flops and head down to the beach. But here there’s this gorgeous mirage. Sweat, sweat, sweat.

In the UK we have a campaign that rates all the bodies of water for swimming, and tells you how clean they are, so a lot of places try to score well on that because they get good PR (plus I guess people are more likely to visit!). Do you guys not have a similar system? I think maybe you should!

Beautiful photos – what a stunning place! So sad that the water is unsafe for swimming.

Love the shot of the seagull with the jet stream! These turned out really well!
