I try to post three times a week, but on Wednesday I did something I’ve never done before and I was so excited I spent the time I should have been posting looking up short hair tutorials on YouTube. This morning, realizing it was Caturday, I leapt up out of bed, threw on my clothes from yesterday (because I’m dorky and like the photos in my posts to match!) and asked Tom to take some photos of Morn and me.
This is the first time I’ve ever done anything this drastic with my hair, ever, and I love it. I have wanted a shorter hair style since 1999 but never had the courage. I’m so glad I finally did.
Yesterday I used one towel instead of two after showering, I only used one pump of shampoo (versus four or sometimes five), my hair was dry and ready in five minutes, and I did my workout without a ponytail falling loose. I used Tom’s hair wax because I realized I don’t have anything like that for styling shorter hair, but I’m excited to find a jar my very own. Gals out there with short hair, do you have any recommendations for your favorite products?
For years I’ve done a yo-yo of cutting my hair and immediately growing it back out again, but for once I feel like I’d like to keep this for quite a while. I’m looking forward to summer with short hair, rocking cute vintage hats, and getting ready in record time.
Photos 2-7 taken by Tom, processed by me using new SLP Action set.

9 Oct 2013 at 2:02 pmI read somewhere on here you were searching for a new hair dye after yours was discontinued. I am on the search for a perfect copper (like yours) and would lOVE to know what you end up using.

29 Jul 2012 at 10:36 amI absolutely love your hair color. Ive wanted to do a short hair style, you totally rock it. My hair has such a wierd wave to it though so it makes it difficult.

4 Aug 2012 at 4:15 pmOh my gosh, thank you! I have always wanted to do a shorter hair style but I was nervous! I’m so glad I finally did it though. I’m having fun with the different styles as it grows slowly back out.

17 May 2012 at 9:11 amHi
1. Adorable hair!!!
2. What exactly are you wearing under your blue T shirt? Is that two camisoles? I’ve been looking for a cami to use under my lower cut shirts that are too low to wear to work as is. I like what you have going on with the multiple layer and colors.
Sara
18 May 2012 at 2:16 pmIt’s actually a really neat ankle length slip that has two pieces to it, but the same thing could be done with two sheer camis, I’m sure.

29 Apr 2012 at 11:12 pmYour new hair style looks gorgeous! Morn is gorgeous too! Is he named after the character Morn from Start Trek?
Sara
1 May 2012 at 2:17 pmMorn actually gets his name from a character of the same name from a story I wrote when I was much younger. But “Morn” came from my love of morning light. =)

28 Apr 2012 at 6:10 pmYour hair looks absolutely fantastic. Short hair definitely suits you!
I got mine cut about a month ago … it’s still so short that I don’t need that second towel when I shower, so I laughed when you said the same thing.

22 Apr 2012 at 11:32 pmHi I really love this haircut! I also really like your color red. I was red and have started to dye it back blonde but really am not digging it as much. Do you mind telling me your color? Thanks!
Sara
24 Apr 2012 at 11:43 amHi Steph, I get this question all the time. Unfortunately the color I used was discontinued! I still have a few boxes left from my buying binge when they discontinued, but I’ve been keeping an eye out for what to do after I run out. After going through years of different styles of red, I’ve found the key to the more natural looking orangey red is to look for colors that say, “copper” “penny” or “strawberry blonde” (or even copper blonde!) and for the most part to avoid colors that say “auburn” “red auburn”, etc- because those colors tend to yield a more apple red, instead of the natural looking orange red.
I really hope that helps! I promise I’ll do a post or an FAQ on my new hair color as soon as I find a new one that is not discontinued. =)
(I have my eyes on Revlon’s “Strawberry Blonde” next!)

29 Apr 2012 at 4:11 pmThank you so much for getting back with me! I will definitely check into some more copper hues!

21 Apr 2012 at 1:45 amthe new hair looks awesome, getting anything (but especially a cut) done to your hair can be scary.

17 Apr 2012 at 3:07 amYour hair looks great! Especially with such a vibrant colour! I’ve had hair as short as yours (a wee bit shorter at the moment) for almost a year and though I miss my long hair from time to time, short is wonderful! Shape Paste by Shu Uemura is the perfect mix of textures, not to stiff, not too soft and most importantly not too greasy. Bumble and Bumble Sumotech is also a good choice. I’ve tried a couple other waxes, but find them much too greasy. Hope this helps! Enjoy your new hair and have fun with it!
Sara
17 Apr 2012 at 3:58 pmThank you so much! And thanks extra loads for the recommendations. I’m actually considering going just a wee bit shorter myself when I go in for my next trim, I adore this length and I’d love to keep it, but I’m curious to see what it’s like a tad shorter too. I’ve been YouTube hair tutorials and product reviews a lot over the last few days, I’m so excited!

16 Apr 2012 at 6:41 pmI’m a long time lurker coming forward saying
1. I love that cut! It looks wonderful on you! I’ve had long hair 95% of my life, and would love to be brave enough to do something like that.
2. What do you use to dye your hair? I have an appointment next week and am taking your hair as an example as to what color I want. I thought if I knew the exact color it might help. 🙂
Sara
17 Apr 2012 at 3:48 pmHi Kristen! Thanks so much for saying hi!
1. Thank you so much! That’s pretty much my story too. My hair has been long for ages and I’ve always wondered what a shorter style would look like, but I’ve been an absolute chicken about it. I’m really glad I’ve done it now!
2. I started to reply here in the comment box but it ended up being really long so I emailed you! So, check your inbox! =)

16 Apr 2012 at 9:08 amI use Redken Matte Sponge 5, and sometimes an organic gloss gel, or the ringlet formula from Redken. I love your hair! It’s so much easier to manage-I’m growing mine out just to see what it’ll look like in-between my short hair and the bob I had.
Sara
17 Apr 2012 at 4:00 pmThanks, Kel! I’m pretty sure I’m hooked on this length, though I might go a tad shorter next time just so that I can have a longer time between hair appointments. =)

15 Apr 2012 at 11:18 pmI don’t have any short hair tips because even with long hair I do all the same stuff… Which is basically nothing… Just wash, towel dry, blow-dry bangs and call it a day.
BUT. I did want to mention shampoo, since you commented that you use four or five pumps (!!!!) with longer hair. I don’t know what brand you use, but a lot of the higher quality shampoos you’d buy at a salon by certified sellers will last way longer and require way less pumps/squirts even with long hair. Shampoo you’d buy at the grocery store usually has a lot more water that dilutes the ‘poo.
Sometimes I’m cheap and buy it when I’m at Trader Joe’s, but I ALWAYS notice that I have to use WAY more to get a good lather going and the bottle’s always empty before I know it.
And, I know I already said it but your new ‘do is adorable. You look really great with short hair! I will admit, I’m going to miss having a heidi-braid pal this summer. But I will be eternally jealous of your mega low maintenance!
Sara
17 Apr 2012 at 4:06 pmThanks, Kim! I use Tashodi (http://www.tashodi.ca/) and one pump gets me about a dime size! (Is that normal?) I must admit I’m kind of clueless when it comes to shampoos and the like because I just go after what smells nice and fits my ethical needs. Either way I’ve had my Tashodi for well over a year (they’ve since discontinued my type… boo!) so it’s lasted me quite a while. My matching bar of soap however just finally kicked the bucket and I’m sad because it was so lovely. (Green Tea & Mandarin).
I’ll probably miss doing things like heidi braids and katniss braids this summer but I was doing yoga this morning and reaaaaallly liked that my ponytail wasn’t coming loose or my hair falling all over my face. Perhaps I will snatch a wig for the days I feel like doing Heidi braids. =)
Kim
17 Apr 2012 at 6:18 pmI’ve never heard of Tashodi, but I hear you on the ethnical front. I parted in college with one of my favorite shampoos because they still tested on animals and to this day… No change. Lame!
I recently switched to Paul Mitchell on recommendation from a friend. Shampoo and conditioner runs me about $20 altogether, and everything I’ve read or heard about the company has been great on the eco-friendly front. Allegedly they were the first shampoo biz to stop testing on animals, too. So that’s neat. 🙂
Ooh, and on the wig note, I actually have a friend who’s a model and she wears wigs ALL the time. I’ve always been insanely jealous of her ability to pull it off. Something tells me her being tall, skinny and flawlessly gorgeous has something to do with it… hah.

15 Apr 2012 at 11:07 pmWhat a cutie! Such a furry kitten!
PS Love your new hair cut!

17 Apr 2012 at 4:06 pmThanks so much, Janice! (And Morn says thank you, too.)

15 Apr 2012 at 9:17 pmOh my gosh, I LOVE your new hair! It looks so fantastic! Ahh! Someday I want to try super short, but for now I’m a wimp. You look so amazing!
Sara
17 Apr 2012 at 4:07 pmThank you! I was soooo scared (until I got in the chair) but I’m so thrilled at how it turned out. I’ve always been curious of how it would look or if I could pull it off but fear always won out! I was also always flip flopping all the time. I’d think I’d want it short, cut it, and then immediately want to grow it out again. Definitely not a formula for inspiring short hair confidence!
Joy
15 Apr 2012 at 7:59 pmAwww, it looks lovely! You definitely have one of those faces that can pull off the short hairstyles!
Sara
17 Apr 2012 at 4:08 pmThanks so much, Joy!

15 Apr 2012 at 12:49 pmIt looks fantastic! That really took guts!
Sara
17 Apr 2012 at 4:08 pmHaha, thanks, Meagan! I was pretty nervous but I’m really really glad I did it and am ultimately quite pleased.

15 Apr 2012 at 12:17 pmLove it! I’m in the midst of growing out my pixie cut (painful) and the length of your hair right now is my present hair goal. Looks so good 🙂
Sara
17 Apr 2012 at 4:09 pmThanks so much, Janis! I thought I might go a tad shorter next time so I could have a longer time between visits to the salon, but I’m really happy with this length.
Krysta
15 Apr 2012 at 10:18 amWhoa! You look great! I understand the whole yo-yo hair cut than growth thing, but everyone in awhile change is great. Plus, if this summer is anything like last summer, shorter hair would be a like free A/C.
Love the photos of Morn.
Sara
17 Apr 2012 at 4:10 pmThanks Krysta, I’m kind of excited to see what a summer will be like with shorter hair. I thought this summer might be more intense than last summer since we had such an unbelievably mild winter this year. I’m excited!

15 Apr 2012 at 10:14 amYour hair looks amazing and Tom takes lovely photos.

17 Apr 2012 at 4:11 pmThanks, Genevieve. I’ll be sure to tell Tom you said so. =)

15 Apr 2012 at 4:16 amWow, you’ve wanted short hair since 1999 but never did it? This astounds me. I hope you don’t wait so long to achieve other things you want 🙂 especially when the results are so excellent! I’m glad you’re loving your new hairdo, it looks really great!
Sara
17 Apr 2012 at 4:13 pmHaha, thanks Gaby. I wouldn’t say it’s been a never ending desire since 1999, more like something I thought about and always wondered if I could pull it off. I’ve cut it shorter a few times (and even once to my jawline) and didn’t like the result and immediately wanted to grow it out again, so that definitely didn’t inspire confidence that I would like it any shorter. =)

14 Apr 2012 at 10:00 pmYour hair looks really good! I wish I could get away with short hair because long hair in the Florida summer can be so hot.
Love the cat pictures, completely adorable.
Sara
17 Apr 2012 at 4:16 pmThanks, Dina! I couldn’t help but notice you’re a runner (from your domain name), I just went running for the first time in a while and it was excellent to feel the weight of my hair off my head while running.

14 Apr 2012 at 9:41 pmI had to come out of lurkdom to tell you I LOVE IT! It’s so flattering and lovely. It’s funky, but classic, but beautiful – all in one. Very, very brilliant choice.

17 Apr 2012 at 4:19 pmHi Jen! Thank you so so much!

14 Apr 2012 at 5:49 pmit looks so beautiful! it took me a lot of courage to cut my hair short (though not as short as yours). i miss my long hair at times but i had a moment today when i realized perhaps i’m a short-hair kind of girl. it’s so much easier to deal with!
Sara
17 Apr 2012 at 4:21 pmThanks, Sarah! I’ve had the same kind of realization! I told myself that when I cut it short, if I decided I didn’t like it and wanted to grow it out, that I would still give it my all and rock it the best I could while it was growing out. Turns out I love it and especially love the low maintenance! I don’t know if I’m in a honeymoon stage or not right now but I haven’t missed my long hair yet. =)

14 Apr 2012 at 5:40 pmLove the new ‘do! When I got my first drastic haircut, I felt like it changed my life (I had always had long hair) and that I’d never grow my hair out again. Now, it’s the longest it’s ever been, but this makes me remember how light and easy short hair is! You look great. 🙂
Sara
17 Apr 2012 at 4:23 pmI do admit I feel inspired and invigorated and like a new person! I imagine that one day I’ll probably grow my hair out again but I really can’t see that happening in the near feature! Thanks so much!

14 Apr 2012 at 5:35 pmI already told you this on flickr but I absolutely love it! It looks fantastic and I’m glad you’re loving it so much 🙂
