2010The Simple Gibson Tuck

I’ve received a lot of compliments on this easy rendition of the once popular Edwardian hairstyle, and I keep thinking to myself that Victorian is in right now and I should share this simple style. But it wasn’t until a make up artist stopped me in a coffee shop in Traverse City asking me how that I finally put my foot down. As soon as I get back from Ireland, I thought. Well today it’s snowing up a storm outside and I don’t have everything I need to bake the muffins I wanted, so here we are! These photos aren’t the greatest display of the Simple Gibson because I didn’t have a mirror and I’m SO picky that I wanted the photos of the hair to match the video, so I took them right after the video. The look is a lot cleaner when you have a mirror.

What You Need
-
★ comb
★ hair tie (it doesn’t really matter what color)
★ bobby pins
★ roller (optional)
What You Do
Pull your hair into a ponytail. You can make it high, semi-high, or low, as this looks great in all three. (I’ve tried them all!) Next you’ll want to gently pull on the ponytail, almost as if you were going to take it out, and then take your finger and wiggle a gap into your ponytail (in between your scalp and the hair tie) making a sizable nest. Twist your ponytail around your finger with one hand and then roll it up into the neat little nest you made. Now this part can be tricky: keep rolling it up until your ponytail holder can be tucked flush against your scalp and then use the bobby pins to pin your hair tie against your scalp, keeping the style in place. It’s important that you pin the hair tie because not only will it keep the look in place, but it will hide your hair tie all together. Pretty awesome, I’d say.
Using A Roller
Using a roller instead of your finger is also an option. It’s good to use a roller if you’re trying this look with shorter hair, or you have lots of layers and you don’t want them falling all over the place, or you have really fine hair and it’s hard to roll it. What it does is fattens the bun and really makes it stick out, so if you have shorter hair, this will make it look fuller.
It’s definitely handy, but be careful, because I’ve found that sometimes it’s hard to unroll it without your hair getting stuck all over the place. I’ll probably end up getting a smooth roller because sometimes I love that fat tuck look.
Sorry the video is hazy and slightly out of focus. I’m still getting used to the video options on the new camera! (Also, if the video is for some reason blocked in your country you should be able to view it with an alternate soundtrack here on YouTube.)
Update: I’ve decided that the Gibson Tuck is way more fun with shorter hair.

My hair is just brushing my collarbone in this photo and it tucked beautifully! So those of you worried about this look with shorter hair, don’t. =)

I love this!
I work in a kitchen so my hair has to always be up and “off the collar”. I was running out of hairstyles to do, thanks! : )
Emily
I love this!!! Thank you for showing how easy this is to do!.. I am terrible at doing my hair but this is cute even messy!
Ollin
I’m always trying and racing out the door every morning. So I always put my hair up in a ponytail through the whole day. Recently I feel like I should mix it up, and I loved this! I can’t wait to try it. Thank you so much!
Sara
I know what it’s like to be rushed! I’m so glad this could help.
Kirsten
What song did you use? I keep watching the clip over and over so I can hear it again! Plus, I love the hairstyle.
Sara
I think the song you’re talking about is probably “Triumphant” by Röyksopp! (Thank you!)
jo
what hair dye do you use? your shade of red is lovely!
Alissa
This was fabulous and easy! Thank you so much for posting. Today is my birthday and I was looking to do something special with my hair and this is definitely it!
Sara
I’m so glad!! Happy Birthday, I hope you have a fabulous day.

I love this hairstyle, but I thought I’d share a tip that I discovered through my own trial and error. I have incredibly fine and thin hair and it’s about to my collarbones. Doing this style the traditional way works alright but I’ve found that my roll in the back is pretty skimpy, and my hair often splits down the middle (from my crown to where I create the “nest”) since my hair is so thin. I’ve found that if I braid my hair first (just a simple braid beginning at my nape), then roll it up and tuck, it turns out beautifully! The braid helps with three things: It fattens up the roll, it prevents loose hairs from escaping (gives my fine hair some “grip”), and also prevents the “split” from forming. Just thought I’d share in case I have any hair twins out there.
Sara
Stevie, thanks so much for sharing this tip! I’m going to try this tomorrow. My hair isn’t so short anymore but I’d like to give it a shot anyway. =)

Thanks! My hair is really fine too and there’s not much out there for fine hair! are there any styles to tutorials that you could recommend. I’m getting bored with always having my hair down all the time. Thanks
Lili
Please do other tutorials that can work for short hair:)
Asha
This style is beautiful! I Love your hair color. I can’t wait to try this when I straighten my hair in April.
Asha
This is beautiful! I’ll have to try this when I straighten my hair in April.
Cathy
I can’t watch the video. It says that its private and i am not allowed to watch it. Is there another way to watch it? This is a great tutorial though!

You have such amazing hair! Unfortunately, mine’s not as long, so when I do something similar I tuck it in to a hair band-thingy (that goes all round your head if you get what I mean?!).
Emma xx
Sara
I definitely know what you mean, Emma. I had my hair cut pretty short for a while with lots of layers and they were always falling out all over the place. I’m sure it looks adorable with the head band! (You could even wrap flowers in it!)
Mattie
LOVE this updo! So elegant. Thanks for sharing.

sarah

Stumbled upon your Gibson Twist on Pinterest, and then was bemused to see a trip to Traverse City is what pushed you to post it. I’m from TC and was just there over the holidays. I swear it’s the center of the universe. Nice blog! Thanks for the hair tips.
Sara
I know what you mean about Traverse City seeming like the center of the universe sometimes! I used to live in both Elk Rapids and Traverse City, and that’s where I was living before I moved here to Canada with Tom! We have lots of fond memories of our adventures in TC!

Thank you so much for sharing this great hair tutorial. I’m always looking for quick ways to style my hair and this is perfect. The how-to video really helps.
Sara
Glad you found it useful, Jackie!
Meg Meyers
Adorable!! I have never been a “hair-do” girl but this I think I can handle!!
Stephanie
In love with this hairstyle! Tried it for Christmas Eve and it looked so simple yet elegant. Thanks so much for sharing!

Your tutorials are crystal clear. I did my hair for a party last night in the Gibson, and my girlfriend said it looked amazing. Thanks for the perk-me-up!
Sarah
This is awesome! I can’t wait to use it for work and holiday parties! You are a lifesaver…so easy!
Kasey
YOU, yes YOU, are officially my hero!!
I was led here by Pinterest, and for once in my entire 25 years of existence, I was able to do an UPDO on MYSELF!
I’m off to my husband’s company holiday party this evening, and I wanted to look fancy, but not TOO fancy (like a head full of curls), and this is perfect. I added a rhinestone comb from our wedding day for a touch of bling. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10100203407117485&l=3ce0d707f3
I LOVE THIS, and you. Adding you to my RSS!
Hannah
LOVE thank you so much for sharing!
Joy Ribisi
Love this style! I actually did something similar last night for a work party but pulled my ponytail through, kind of like a twist. It’s my favorite fancy non-fancy hairdo for work functions. I like this style, too. I’m eager to try it!
Nida
WOW. I can’t even tell you how amazing this made me feel. I looked through a couple more of your hair posts; I am totally the same easy – I was a floater in high school, am the eldest child, and so I never had anyone to teach me all of these awesome tricks. Thank you!!!
Nik
You probably mean “tucked flush against…” because “tucked flesh against” doesn’t mean anything.
Sara
You are right, thank you! =)
Molly h
Love this- thank you! and your hair color is beautiful.

The Illusion of complex hairdos just got spiked!
Tried it out: doing it just went just a little faster than the first compliment…
annelise
I found this post via pinterest, tried it out this morning and received a compliment within the first ten minutes! Such a deceptively easy updo. Thanks so much for the video.
Nicole Radja
Thanks! Very cute style.
Melissa
umm…AMAZING!!! HOLY! I love this!
Carol
Thank you so much! My hair is ugly and thin, but it looks so pretty up this way! Makes it look like I have a lot more of it too!
P.S. Your hair is beautiful!
Sarah
Thank you for this simple hairstyle. Funny thing I’m actually from Alpena, MI, so I’m thankful for whomever stopped you in T.C.!
Jessica
Wowwww I came for the hairstyle but stayed for the haircolor. I’ve been a Lush fan for ages but have never been brave enough to try the henna (or any haircolor for that matter). Do you mind me asking what your natural hair color is? Mine is …somewhere between blonde and brown. Did you have to bleach yours? I have a little natural red but I’ve always wanted color like yours. Any secrets you can tell me would be muuuuch appreciated.
Jessica
Sara
Thank you so much, Jessica. I did not have to bleach my hair first at all. My natural color is somewhere between blonde and brown myself. I’ll get natural hi-lights in the summer to blonde if I leave it!
I did not have to bleach my hair first, and I used a temporary dye over hi-lights. After a week or two it fades and the hilights shine through as a lighter orange/red color to give dimension. The downside to that is that when it really starts fading the bottom of my hair can be a bit brownish, but I don’t mind.
The trick is to stay away from the wine or purple reds. Look for more of a Strawberry blonde, or light auburn. Revlon Colorsilk 45 bright auburn might be a good choice! Also, Caroline did mention Caca Rouge by Lush as a natural alternative, but I have yet to try it!
It took me a few tries to find the red I liked, because each dye is different to each person, but in the end I found what I was looking for.
=)
Good luck!
Sarah
You use a temporary dye to get that color?? It’s gorgeous. I’m scared to dye my hair because I have natural highlights all year long with a gorgeous light brown/red color… I’d love to try red sometime but I don’t want the ugly root marks that have to grow out over the next 50 years until my hair gets as long as it is again haha.
Beka
I love this! I found it via StumbleUpon, and your tutorial looks great. I think it would even look really nice if it was done partly to the side.
Ingrid
Thanks so much for this tutorial, I wore it to school today and not only did it keep it’s shape all day with just two bobby pins and a hair elastic (I have thin hair which tends to slip out of braids and ponytails) I also got loads of compliments asking how I did it! So, thanks!
drea
just found your blog thru pinterest! thanks so much for this tutorial! i love finding new hairstyles, and it’s hard to find good instructions like this! i’m going to look around and see what else you have.
Mary
Fabulous! Going to try this today and wear it with a smile on my face.
heather
I tried so very hard to do this last night for the USMC Birthday Ball; however, my hair did not cooperate. You gave such great directions, and the video was so helpful, but as usual, my hair won. Regardless, I’ll keep trying as this is a gorgeous style! Looking forward to more videos (and kitty photos)…
Cheers,
*Heather*
Caroline
I just did this to my hair and I love it!! It looks so much nicer than a messy bun!
Jen
Love this style!
ps. You’re hair color is beautiful!
julia
hey there, this is just SUCH a lovely hairdo. t reminds me so much of those jane austen films. i love all things old school and vintage inspired, even hair…

Thelma
My hair is very thick
So this is quite hard for me to do sometimes (a few weeks after a haircut), do you have any tips?
Kala
Thelma- I have very thick hair too and layered (oh and my hair was dry when I made my attempts)… It took me about 7 tries, but I finally got it. I used about 10 bobby pins. Then I *tried* to fasten 2 in the hair tie, but mostly I used the bobby pins along the sides and positioned them to come in towards my hair tie until it felt secure. It’s nowhere near as pretty though

Glad there’s other thick hair gals out there that have issue with these hair-dos and its not just me!
I’ll keep trying. This hairstyle is too cute.
Sara
Definitely! I just suggest trying to pin it in parts as best you can. My sister’s hair is fairly thick but it’s down to her bum and I was able to tuck it for her. You just have to take it piece by piece and spread it out across the head instead of all clumped together. (I hope that makes sense!)
Amy
I’m in love with this! I have shoulder length hair and it works a charm for me, I can even get away with not having to pin it!
It looks super cute with a bow too
Caroline
Hi Sarah! Thanks so much, that’s really kind of you to say!
It depends on how committed I’m feeling, I’ll either do it overnight and wrap my head in several layers of clingfilm and towels OR (the more doable option) for about 4 or so hours.
Hope this helps!
Jennifer
I love this look, but since I recently cut my hair I feel like I don’t have as many styling options and have more difficulty finding styles I could try. I was thrilled when you said this would work well with short hair, I can’t wait to try it!
Saga
Hi Sara,
What a grest hair-do! Just like you say, it’s actually a lot easier than it looks, and some people would probably keep it to themselfs rather than sharing, but you share, and I appreciate that! I’ve allready tried it twice, since my hair’s got many and quite short layers, it only works as long as it’s wet, but I’ll just wait until my hair gets a little bit longer and then I’ll try it again…
Thank’s again for sharing!
Regards
Saga

I just found this via Pinterest and just tried it! It’s so great! Thanks for posting this, it’ll be a new staple in my easy go-to hairstyles!
Sara
Oh thank you so much Caroline! I will definitely look into it because your color is perfect. (I love the orangey/Anne of Green Gables/natural reds!) Do you use the Caca Rouge? I must say I was hesitant because the woman pictured in the video has a more magenta red. Thanks again so much!
Caroline
I love this hair style! Lovely and elegant! And if you’re still chasing a hairdye, I use henna from Lush to do mine. Cheap and easy and I always get comments!
Sara

Caroline
Very welcome and yep, I use Caca Rouge. I think it only goes that odd magenta colour if you’re very fair, if you’ve had red in your hair before it seems to pick it up and brighten it, Just so you know, it is messy and smells but the end result is awesome. And use gloves, I didn’t once and I had oompa loompa hands.
Good luck!
Sarah F
Your hair color is beautiful!! I use Caca Rouge as well but mine always comes out so much darker than I would like. How long do you leave yours on?
Also, Sara, I love this video. I’m going to try this out right now!!
