2010A Secret Garden Engagement
Good morning, world! So Tom and I decided to pack a picnic lunch and venture out into the wild unknown for some photos to send out with our wedding invitations last week. We rose early, showered, made sure to match, double checked that the camera was charged, and headed out. We spent a lot of time driving and the first location ended up being surprisingly inhabited by people, but our second location was much better and it was far easier to get comfortable because it was a deserted public garden. Heaven. I’d love, love, love, to take some people there for a photo shoot where I actually get complete control over the camera the whole time, you know? Portraits of one are hard enough with the remote, but it’s virtually impossible to get the shots I want of Tom and I with a tripod (a broken one at that) and remote. But I’d say we did fairly well under the circumstances. We had so much fun that we made a pact to start a new tradition: once a year (at least) we’d like to go out and take quality portraits like this.
Oh gosh, one more thing. Tom surprised me with these really huge cute faux sunflowers and I love them as props. I laughed out loud when he showed me. We used them at the first location though, and I just fell in love with the photos from the second location because we were much more relaxed. They sit together at my desk now, though, and I will be using them again.

I love these pictures. You did a good job and the place is beautiful. Did you take these with your 7D and 50mm 1.4? I almost purchased that camera a couple of weeks ago but decided to stay with my 20D!

Oh my gosh, the 7D is so crazy. I love it but it’s a little overwhelming right now! We did use the 7D, though we actually used the 24-70mm lens for this shoot because of it’s flexibility. But for every day use, I pretty much never go anywhere without the 7D and the 50mm. A match made in heaven, I say!

I’m dying to know–how did you get the shot on the left with only a tripod and remote?
I know you said your tripod was broken, but which would you recommend? I’m tired of stacking up piles of books for my photos!

Well, we were laying down and the camera was just angled down. The tripod lets you put your camera in landscape or profile shot style, or you can just rotate it in Photoshop afterward! The old tripod that I was using was great, though it doesn’t have a brand listed and it was a gift so I’m not sure the exact details. I do know it was from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=tripod&x=0&y=0) and it was only $20! And the only reason it is broken is because my rambunctious feline friends knocked it over. (Thank goodness the camera wasn’t sitting on it!)
