2011My Funny Valentine

A lot of photographer couples take today to share their relationship by posting an elegant portrait set, or by revisiting their greatest hits, so to speak. And while this notion is really quite appealing to me (had the idea and the dress picked out and everything) I realized quite suddenly this morning that I didn’t want to do that anymore. I didn’t want to dress up and take high quality photos and share Tom and I “at our best”. Suddenly I had an overwhelming desire to share us behind the scenes. The every day us. The us that sometimes doesn’t wash her hair or the us that sometimes doesn’t shave his face. Now I know this is a photography blog, and I should be showcasing photography, and not cellphone pics and silly home movies, but I hope you’ll forgive me this once. And who knows, twenty years down the road these cellphone pics could be the “film” of our generation. In which case these photos will be pretty hipster indeed. Or whatever word they come up with next. Cybster. Because, you know, in twenty years we’ll all be cyborgs.
So without further ado, a collection of silly webcam photos from two people who are so in love it’s stupid.

Now for something special that I’ve never shared before. As ridiculous as it may seem, Tom and I make little video letters to our future selves. Mostly it’s a showcase of moments that most people would probably find boring, “We did this today and this is how we felt.” But since I’m feeling particularly nostalgic, I figured I’d share one we made two years ago. (Before we started making them in high definition! Hoo hoo!)

I was backtracking in my Google Reader &found your VDay post…this is so adorable! I want to take some fun photobooth pictures now! My lovey photobooth pictures are typically just me and the pups.
Also love your whiteboard notes!!!
Lisette
I’m melting right now. That’s the kind of relationship I want in the future. You guys are ADORABLE!

Holy heart burst, batman!! I’m usually the Anti-Valentine, but you’ve just made me a believer.

Love you too! (Did you notice how many of those were taken in your house?!)
Siobhan
Very sweet! You seem like such a great, fun, loving couple. I hope you had a great Valentine’s Day xx
Sara
Thank you so much, we like to think we are! I hope yours was fantastic as well.
Siobhan
I did, thank you! It was our anniversary too. My boyfriend and I will spend a lot of time apart this year and miss each others birthdays etc, so we tried to make it very special. We were in Cambodia so it wasn’t a typical flowers and meal out affair xx
Jackie
That video is adorable. Such a cute idea!! xo
Sara
Thanks, Jackie!

I hardly ever comment on your entries because it would be the same comment on and on (“i love your pictures”, “nice photography”) but today I wanted to say you two are such a sweet couple! your white board and your little cute video to future-you made me smile (:
Sara
Well thank you so much for taking the time to comment on this one! It made me smile, too.
Linda
That was a really nice post! I loved the white board comments and the really unguarded look into your relationship with Tom. Seeing the two of you makes me feel a little less cynical.
Sara
Thanks, Linda! I used to be a huge cynic about love and relationships, too. It’s amazing what finding the right person (and being patient enough to wait for them) did for me. I like to share that hope when I can, without “rubbing it in”, if you know what I mean. I hope you had a good day!

[...] know how to edit things or a lot of these would be side-by-side. Haha. After being inspired by Sara’s Valentine’s post, I wanted to post some photos most of you have never seen before. These are from the past several [...]

that video kills me, in all sorts of good ways. I adore you two so much. I hope you had a lovely Valentine’s with each other.
Sara
Thanks La La Lauren. =)

The two of you crack me up! The love you share for each other is truly beautiful…
Sara
You’re one to talk, missy! =)

Just found your blog. It’s pretty rad!
My boyfriend wrote a letter on an index card and stuck it in my notebook. It reminded me of the days when we’d steal each other’s notebooks and write notes or I would draw boobs all over his pages. Ha!
Sara
Jackie, I just saw your comment today and went over to your blog and had to add you to my reader instantly! I love your photos, congrats on being published!
Lauren
So did you stop saying ‘like?” LOL!
I really like that you are willing to share this side of you – of both of you today! It is an EXCELLENT celebration of what and who you are obviously all about. I love your photography and I love that you are also willing to share the ‘real life’ side of yourself with us – I think it’s probably why a lot of us follow your blog! Have a Happy Special Valentine’s Day!
Lauren
PS – Thanks for the nice comment on my blog today.
Sara
I did! It took a while but I really wanted to! Thank you so much for your kind words, I hesitate to share “the boring every day stuff” sometimes because I worry that it’s not what people want to read about- but sometimes it’s nice to be reminded that who we’re reading is an actual person. (At least that’s how I feel about it, anyway.)
I hope you had a fabulous day!
Kim
That video was so stinkin’ cuuuute! And you’ve got me curious now: did you manage to cut “like” out of your vocab? I still have trouble with it, bein’ a California Girl ‘n’ all. *sigh*
Sara
I did (knock on wood?)- though it took a really long time. I struggled for a while consciously trying and then “gave up” and then a month or two later realized I didn’t say it anymore.
Louise
Love it! Especially the funny and lovely letters.
Sara
Thank you so much!
