Personal

Ever So Grateful

Day 4

Unfortunately I no longer have my 400D (XTi) so I had to take a photo of my camera with a point-and-shoot. (I also took one with my Canon AE-1, but for the sake of sharing in a timely matter that will have to wait.)

Aside from Tom and I pledging our hearts to one another, this is one of the most amazing wedding gifts I could have ever received. (With the trip to Ireland is right up there with it.)

This is something I use every single day, most often several times a day. Simply put, my life would be drastically different if photography wasn’t a part of it. And I am ever so grateful that I have the ability to capture my favorite memories and moments, to learn more about the art, and to share everything in such an easy way.

Day 5

A surprise letter and gifts from a dear friend in New Zealand.

I think having friends that you met on the internet is becoming more widely accepted and understood these days, especially now that the internet is now “cool”. I’ve said this before but it’s truly worth repeating: I am continually thankful for the www, and the friendships that I have been able to form over the years because of it. While some of these people I’ve yet to meet in person, (and others I have, and one I married) they are relationships that are very dear to me.

Day 6

I’m grateful that there are so many alternatives out there for Tom and I. We can still enjoy our classic favorites like “eggnog”. I’m aware that eating this way ten, or even five, years ago meant a lot less alternatives available. (It was hard enough getting vegetarian meat substitutes in my small town, let alone something like soy nog!) I am grateful that it is easy for us to still enjoy the traditions we grew up with.

Have a great(ful) weekend, everyone. =)

I’m in the same pickle you were in when you lived in a small town. I’ve been trying to find alternatives but with my mother having thyroid cancer and new studies linking soy to thyroid cancer as well, I’m having more and more trouble finding alternatives.

Soy is all over, but fortunately there are alternatives to that as well. I haven’t seen an eggnog replacement per say, but I know that Tom and I actually prefer rice milk and almond milk over soy. It’s what we cook with and use for cereal and things and usually they have at least rice dream in small towns. I’m sorry to hear about your mom.

I’m a new vegan and I have been tempted by the soy nog…but after reading Maggie’s comment I’ll keep in mind to check the label. Good to know!

We haven’t gotten the Christmas teas in my stores yet. Sugar Cookie tea and now I’ll keep an eye out for the eggnog tea. 🙂

I’ll have to look for that brand next time I’m in the store! I was looking at the soy nog the other day, and a bunch of them still had eggs in it, which seemed.. odd, until I remembered there are lactose intolerant people who still consume eggs. For me it’s the antibiotics I’m allergic to that they shovel into mass farmed cows and chickens that makes finding things like a good eggnog substitute so essential (the boy likes to say I’m allergic to abuse).. but options like small, grass-grazed local dairies and his father owning chickens/honey bees for the families use that makes going vegan very, very difficult for me.

I’m also thankful for the internet (: I feel like past generations mainly grew up so isolated within the confines of their neighborhood, unless they were given the chance to travel or live in other places. Being able to have a conversation with someone on the other side of the country — or the other side of the world — really expands horizons and lets you meet people with experiences and beliefs so much unlike your own.

And on top of that, it was always easier to feel “accepted” among others in an “internet community” when fitting in at school didn’t work out. I guess many people look down on the notion of meeting friends on the internet. But I think that’s starting to die off, and I’m glad. I’ll never be able to look at the internet and think it’s ultimately anything but an improvement for the world.

We just recently passed our one year mark! Dairy was definitely the hardest part for me (Tom dropped it overnight! UGH!) but I just kept trying and eventually I got there. =)

I don’t miss it at all now, and there are so many substitutes that I don’t mind. We prefer ricemilk and almond milk over soy- but the soy eggnog is crazy delicious! I have no idea how they make it so creamy.

And that tea is AMAZING! If you are in the US it should be fairly easy to find. Give it a shot, it’s a mix between green and black tea, amazingly delicious, dairy-free, and gluten free!
