Personal Words & Photos With Tom

A Portrait Post

I’ve been experimenting with portraiture recently. I tend to take pictures of inanimate objects more than I do people, and I thought it might be nice to branch out a bit. Part of the reason I’ve been avoiding taking portraits comes down to the mechanics of the shoot. You can pose an object as much as you’d like, you can get in its face with the camera and get those little details you want, and you can take 300 shots trying to get your composition way you want it without annoying your subject.

Portraiture on the other hand requires quite a lot more finesse, but I think the rewards of doing a great portrait far outweigh that of capturing a good scene or a nicely composed shot of food or objects. Being able to show the best side of someone so that even they go ‘Wow!’ when they see the picture is something you just can’t get with landscape photography.

Sara humoured me and we took a bunch of photos out in the leaves so that I could practice– lovely lady! (I have no idea what we were talking about for the claw pictures, but whatever it was made for good photos!)

Thanks so much! I’m torn between number two and three myself, but four is a great serious portrait of Sara.

Thank you! Personally I think she’s the most beautiful when she’s at her goofiest because it’s not just her face you’re seeing but her personality as well. It’s those goofy outtakes that always end up being my favourites.
