Today it was 7°C (45°F) and I found myself wishing I had a backyard so Tom and I could have our Thanksgiving feast outside in the warm light and fresh air. It didn’t take long for me to start feeling grumpy about the apartment and it’s lack of yard- but then I realized today was specifically about being thankful, and I do love our little high rise apartment. My thoughts then shifted to the future, as they sometimes do when I’m preparing to photograph big days, and I tried to focus on the fact that we won’t be in a high rise forever, so I need to make the most of it right now. “Three or four, or five years from now when Tom and I are living in a house,” I thought, “What will I miss? What will I wish I had photographed?” And then it hit me.
We decided to wait to eat until after dark and forget the natural light photos (what?!) because how many more years will we get to have Thanksgiving 150ft in the air by city lights? It was fantastic and magical, and something I wouldn’t have thought to try because I would have been too terrified of not having natural light to shoot with.
Our Canadian Thanksgiving was spent having a gluten free brunch at Tom’s mum’s (both his folks have gone GF) and dinner with his dad, where we had our very first taste of a Tofurkey roast. (Aside from the roast, everything else was gluten free to accomodate Tom’s darling sister, who is also gluten free, and it was so delicious!) For our American Thanksgiving we decided to do the roast with cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and mushroom gravy, roasted asparagus, apple cider, and key lime pie (which Tom’s stepmom made, because she’s been on a vegan baking craze). Tom and I toasted to each other and made sure to share five things we were thankful for, as per our tradition, and played footsie under our long coffee table while we ate. I hope those of you that celebrate had a fabulous Thanksgiving, with warm hearts and bellies.
